  • "Over There" is a 1917 hit song written by George M. Cohan, that was popular with the United States military and public during both world wars. It was a patriotic song designed to galvanize American young men to enlist in the army and fight the "Hun". The song is best remembered for a line in its chorus: "The Yanks are coming." This song is either incredibly threatening or patriotic depending on who hears it.

“Noooo, you can’t enter the Great War, America has no vital interest at stake, we’re an isolationist country, don’t send our boys to die in a foreign war!!!” “Haha, over there”

When the US first entered the war, the French and British wanted us as replacements (would fill billets in the French and British armies). Gen. "Black Jack" Pershing wouldn't hear of it, wanting Americans to fight under American commanders, but couldn't convince either general. To break this stalemate, an agreement was reached: the French and British would give Pershing the name of a town to be the location of the first American offensive. If the Americans won, they could fight under American commanders.
